A busy night of report writing tonight as I had to update the previous 2 match reports as well but it ends on a low point as The Vic lost a 3-0 advantage in the darts to slump to a 4-3 defeat and I was mainly responsible having thrown an absolute embarrasment of a leg of darts.
For once we had loads to pick from and Martyn Cooke made himself available for the first time this season having relinquished the captaincy to Stevie Kell due to a Michael Vaughan-esque lack of form. Being a Murton lad, Martyn had the strength to do it without blubbering like a big bairn and without consulting his parents beforehand
Captain Kell was helped in his team selection as last weeks winner Dale Greenfield decided that his home oche blues meant he didn't want to play and George Jennings was away in Benidorm. Having only recovered from blood clots on his legs and lungs it wasn't surprising to learn that George has gone away with his formerly estranged ex-partner who will probably have him insured up to the hilt
S Beadly got the game underway against Captain Kell and his opening throw of 26 was immediatley eclipsed by Kell's ton. An 85 followed from the Engineer but Steve threw a 140 to keep a healthy lead only to see Beadly respond with a ton of his own. A high quality game was over quickly with the home player extending his unbeaten run with a fine 21 darter. Beadly threw almost as well and was down to a double himself.
Tommy Cummings played D White in leg 2 in the battle of the hospital colleagues so a tense battle was always on the cards with bragging rights at stake. Tommy's usually high speed was pedestrian paced against the White-hot throwing speed of his opponent but it was Tommy who was the more accurate of the two in the opening exchanges. WIth victory in sight, Tommy got the bums rush and seemed to have blown it beofre White almost took out a bull finish in what was now an entertaining battle. Tommy seemed to have lost the chance with a number of failed double attempts but one last go saw him finish off White to ensure an early start at work in the morning.
Norman McKenna played Tucker Wilkinson, who was still displaying some amazing facial hair, in leg 3 and I was away on dominoes duty when the game was played. Happily, Norman took the 3rd leg on the trot for the Vic as he took out the highest finish by a Vic player this season with 100 in only 2 darts.
At 3-0 up Kev Cunningham had the chance to seal an unlikely win for the Vic and Kev was up against G Packard. Packard showed excellent composure together with some accurate darts and a ton plus 3 scores in excess of 80 always had him in front. Kev kept plugging away but never had much of a chance and Packard wrapped up the win in little over 20 darts.
Martyn Cooke played G WIlson in the 5th leg and Martyn couldn't have asked for a more difficult opponent for his first game of the season. Martyn hit an 85 with his opening throw but Wilson took over and scored heavily with each visit to extend his advantage. Martyn hit a ton to close the gap but it was never going to trouble Wilson who took out double 6 with Cooke waiting on a 3 dart finish.
WIth only 1 leg betwen the teams, Stevie Burton took on P Maddison in the 6th leg. Stevie started with a 45 which was just about his best score some 30 odd darts later. Maddison looked to start confidently with a dart into treble 20 but that was the highlight of his game as both players suffered from the pressure of wanting to win too badly. Burton missed 2 darts at double top to win the match which allowed Maddison to take out his attempt at tops with his first dart at a double.
At 3-3 the Engineers comeback was complete and they were represented by S Hanlon in the decisive leg. Iggy was on for the Vic and he started well with a 100 in his opening visit. Hanlon, sporting a TT races t-shirt then decided to move through the gears and he sped along with a 140 in reply. A few more average scores followed before a shot of 125 left him a 2 dart finish. Ian was in danger of being lapped and Hanlon took the chequered flag by taking out double 8 to give the Engineers an unlikely triumph.
The dominoes got off to a bad start as Bobby Balls lost out 3-2 to Harry Brace in the first leg. Bobby was unbeaten before tonight and led 2-1 having taken Brace's down off him but this still wasn't enough to shake off the Seaham player off and Harry took the final chalk to take the opener.
Stevie Burton played Davy Punshon in leg 2 and Stevie might as well not bothered to sit down as Punshon played "some of the luckiest hands" of dominoes he'd ever played and thumped The Dominator 3 legs to nil. Back to back whitewashes for The Dominator now so if I get another game this season someone is going to feel the pain
Iggy, recalled at the expense of Norman McKenna, continued his 100% record by coasting to another defeat at the hands of G Napier.
In a Graham v Napier double, father Les took revenge by ousting L Napier in the 4th leg to maintain his own excellent record of victories this season and Les made sure that everyone in the Club knew about it. So much so that he walked past the bait to tell us he'd won before helping himself to a plate full of spicy chicken things.
Tucker Muncaster was another unlucky loser in the final leg as he lost out to T Marron.
Friday night is the first round of the 1001 4 a side darts team game and as per usual The Vic have to play in the preliminary round. We've been handed a tough tooking home draw against The Albion of Ryhope who can boast one of the best 4 man team games as anyone. George should be back from holiday and assuming he doesn't get taken straight to The Royal he should be fit to join Ian Graham, Norman McKenna, and Dale Greenfield with Tommy Cummings, Steve Kell and Kevin Cunningham possibly being available for selection.
The new league table was distributed at yesterday's meeting and the darts team have slipped to 15th place but the dominoes are just off the pace in 6th position. See the latest tables and the full list of results at www.clubgb.com
