Top Club v Vic Report 30/06/2008Two woefully under-strength sides lined up in the first Murton derby of the season tonight in what proved to be a double victory for the home side.
The Vic again lined up without George Jennings due to his detention by the nurses at Sunderland Royal Hospital, Kev Cunningham who failed to appear, Martyn Cooke due to other commitments, David Jenings who was at work and finally Chris Fish who found a warm bath to be preferable to a trip to the Top Club.
An unchanged and, despite it being only the 2nd week of the season, now familiar looking dominoes team lined up with Les Graham, Ian Graham, Tucker Muncaster, Bobby Balls and Norman McKenna.
Last weeks only winner, Stevie Burton, took the oche for the first leg against John Henry Cooke who was left to suck on an unlit cigar following the smoking ban. Undaunted, John still managed to hit the highest scores of the leg with great shots of 121 and 118 but it was Stevie who threw the more consistent darts with almost every last dart finding its way into a high treble. John fluffed a chance to take the game as he missed a dart at double 16 allowing Stevie to hit double 16 to record a 48 finish, which also happens to be the highest finish by a Vic player this season
Boosted by Stevie's opening victory, Gary Symonds, who is actually registered by the Vic this year , took on Kevin Mawhinney in the next leg and it was Kevin who matched high scores with low ones in an inconsistent leg. Gash hung in and left himself on a finish but never got the chance to show his doubling prowess as Kevin levelled the match at 1 apiece.
Norman McKenna, an unlucky loser last week, took on Keith Moss in leg 3. Keith got off to a flyer and was miles ahead thanks to Nonks poor scoring. After giving Keith a 12 dart start, Norman came right back into it and a ton, an 81 and a couple of 60's had Moss under a bit of pressure for the first time in the leg. Keith missed a shot at tops which allowed Norman to go for 40 himself. Norman put his first dart into the tyre, the second one into the wall and the last one right into the top left hand corner of tops to complete an incredible comeback of Andy Murray proportions.
Craig Greenfield was on next and played R Hall. Craig threw one of the most consistent legs for the away team but was once again undone by poor finishing which allowed the Top Club to level the scores. at 2 each. Craig was a little unlucky though as he missed out on a 118 finish, and then left himself double 13, double 11 and finally double 3 so never had the pick of his favourite finishes. Hall also struggled to finish the leg but took out double 7 at the first attempt.
Tommy Cummings, another unlucky loser last week, played Neil Anderson in the crunch 5th leg and Tommy always looked likely to put the Vic into the lead. However, Neil kept going and Tommy's failure to hit a double again proved costly as Neil hit double top at the first attempt to put the Top Club ahead for the first time.
This seasons skipper, Stevie Kell, woefully out of form last week, had actually thrown his darts away and despite Stevie suggesting he bought a hedgehog to throw this week decided to buy a new set of darts instead. All seemed to be going to plan as Stevie hit a 36 with his opening throw which was more than he managed to total with 12 darts the week before. His opponent K Thomas threw the best leg of darts for the home side and hit some good scores, including a couple of 100+, but Steve never gave up and battled to stay in touch. Once more it was a case of what might have been as Thomas took out his double to complete the victory for the home team.
Iggy played Kevin Cargill in the last leg and Kevins slow play made Frankie McGann look like a whippet afer a hare as he ground out another leg for the home team. Wearing a pair of new boots that were more like a pair of lifesize dumper trucks rather than Caterpillars, Kevin kept going as Ian gathered dust and eventually took out his double after Ian had also missed the chance to get a W beside his name.
Captain Les Graham got the doms side off to a winning start by defeating Martin Jennings in the opener. Home captain David Treweeke levelled matters by beating Tucker Muncaster in the next leg before Bobby Balls gave the Vic the lead once more as he beat H Nelson 3-0.
Last weeks losing pair of Iggy and Norman McKenna were to taste defeat again, Iggy to John Henry Cooke and Nonka to J Thompson in what was to be the deciding leg of the night.
Hopefully the Vic will have a stronger line up when we play Deneside Club at home next week but the Top Club were also short of several established players including Stu Irving, John Treweeke and Paul Robinson so we can't really complain about being under strength.
Friday night is the first Cup match of the season away to Mitchells of Seaham and the Vic are already struggling with Steve Kell, Les Graham, Ian Graham, Bobby Balls and George Jennings all unavailable and Tommy Cummings, David Jennings, Kevin Cunningham and Martyn Cooke are doubtful leaving only Stevie Burton, Craig Greenfield, Tucker Muncaster, Norman McKenna as definites.

Well you have the same amount of victories as some of our more illustrious players like Cummings and Kell Gash - keep up that percentage and you can be next years Captain
