Vic v Top Club Result 10/12/2007

Following last weeks opening double of the season against the Times Inn, the darts team went looking for a quickfire follow up having thrashed the Top Club 5-2 away earlier in the season.

The chances looked decidedly slim as Captain Martyn Cooke, having thrown a snorter the previous week, was absent, Craig was at work, Ada had a late call up to double up as Santa's little helper and Kev was absent following the terrible events of the last 7 days. I'm sure everyone who knows Kev passes on their deepest condolances to Kev and the kids.

Back to the matches and Bobby Balls took on Neil Anderson in the opening leg. Both players found the going tough and a succession of low scores prompted a whip round for extra sticks of chalk. Neil eventually found his range with a ton followed by an 85 which was quickly followed by Ballsy hitting a 135 to stay in touch. Neil closed out the game by hitting double 1 and double 19 when double top would have been so much easier  Very Happy  Very Happy

After the opening loss, Iggy played D Hughes (Yosser) in the second leg. Ian started a steady leg of darts with Yosser struggling to find his range. Consistency proved to be the winner as Ian planted double 16 with his first attempt to level the match.

Nonka was up against the Top Club's (probably) longest serving player, Stu Irving, in leg 3 and Stu threw his first dart out of the board before finding his range (and treble 20) with his next darts. Stu seemed to find a treble with every 3 darts to go well ahead as Nonka found scoring difficult. At the crucial stage of the game, Stu managed to push every dart at the double just the wrong side and Norman clawed his way back into match. Both players missed a host of doubles to take victory but it was left to the home player to secure the victory by nailing double 8.

At 2-1 up, Tommy Cummings started like a man on a mission against K Thomas. Tommy was down to a 17 dart finish after only 16 darts but Thomas stuck to his task and never game Tommy room for complacency. Tom suffered an attack of the missed doubles as he failed to hit 12, 6 then 3 to leave himself on double 1. Thomas followed suit and after a duel at madhouse Tom hit the decisive double to send the Vic into a clear 3-1 lead.

Geordie Jennings was on next against the usually reliable John Treweeke in a repeat of their meeting earlier in the year. Then, George hit a 180 and was in with a chance of a 12 darter before struggling to finish but eventually won after several missed doubles. This time around George proved to be consistent rather than spectacular but it paid off as he threw a steady leg, always maintaining the advantage over John, and finished with his first dart at double top.

WIth the game secure Stevie Burton played Keith Moss in the 6th leg. Moss hit treble 20 with his opening salvo of 83 and Stevie responded with a 123 to start an exciting leg of darts between 2 evenly matched players. A decent standard of scores was maintained but Moss took an excellent leg in 22 darts with Burton forlornly waiting to get a shot at double 16.

Kev Cargill played captain for the night Steve Kell in the last leg and it was the away player who threw an excellent leg of darts despite having nothing to play for apart from pride. Cargill romped to a 24 dart leg of his own, leaving Kell way back on a 3 darter.

The dominoes team got off to the worst start possible as Iggy lost his first game in something like 278 games against John Henry Cooke. Les followed up with a loss against John Treweeke to make it a rare double family failure.

David Treweeke made it a double family victory by humbling Bobby Balls in the next leg to send the Top Club 3-0 ahead before the irrepressible Nonka took another double by taking victory at the expense of Keith Moss.

Tucker Muncaster continued his run of defeats as Kev Cargill completed his own personal double.

The darts team can be proud of taking a hard fought victory against an admittedly stuggling Top Club team, especially with so many established players being unavailable.

The doms lads couldn't seem to get going so it'll be the bag man to blame again  Very Happy  Very Happy

Next week is the last game before the Christmas / New Year break and is away to Deneside Club who are in a similar position to the Vic in both leagues. The darts lads will be looking to preserve the recent run of victories and will hope to avenge the score earlier in the season which started a 6 game losing streak.

No Cup games before next year which will be the individual 20 doubles in the darts plus the pairs dominoes which are played on Friday 11 January (8pm start) with the Finals Night being hosted by the Vic the following Friday.
