Post Post subject: Vic v Island Club Result 07/01/2008
The Vic hosted the Island Club in our opening fixture of 2008. The darts team lined up as follows:-

Martyn Cooke, Steve Kell, Norman McKenna, Stevie Burton, Ian Graham, George Jennings and Tommy Cummings.

The dominoes team, unchanged now for several weeks lined up with:-

Les Graham, Tucker Muncaster, Ian Graham, Bobby Balls and Norman NcKenna.

Norman started the first darts match of 2008 in a match that he'll quickly want to forget. His opponent, S Donaldson, started off with an 85 followed by an 80 with The Nonk strugglng to hit anything respectable. A couple of steady 60s from Donaldson had him well clear and Nonk managed a best score of only 52 by the time Donaldson had secured the opening leg for the Island Club.

Stevie Burton was up next and was desperate to improve on what had been an abysmal 2007 for darts results. After a poor opening throw Burton settled down and a ton plus a few 85s had him down to a 170 finish after 18 darts. D Potter, representing the away team opened up well and later hit a 140 to keep pace with Burton and it was Potter who surged ahead as Burton went all to pot for the remainder of the game. Potter took out double 10 to take the leg with Burton waiting on double top.

Tommy Cummings played George "Cromwell" Halliday in leg 3 and Tommy threw some impressive darts as Halliday struggled. Despite being well ahead for most of the game, Tommy suffered at the business end of the game and Halliday took an unlikely victory with an excellent 97 checkout to send the away team 3-0 ahead.

Stevie Kell was up next and he played K Dickinson, Like the previous 2 matches, the home player threw the better darts in the opening stages and Steve was miles ahead by the time he needed a double. Stevie's mysterious mental arithmetic was it's usual self as he left himself needing double 17. After missing that plus a million and 1 other doubles, Steve allowed his opponent to get right back into the match and Dickinson was probably in a state of shock to find himself down to a double. The pair traded attempts at double 1 before Steve secured the leg for the Vic to narrow the Island Club's lead.

George Jennings played the man mountain Dean Halliday in the next leg and once again the home player started impressively. Halliday threw a few bags of nails before rescuing his leg with a 140 followed by 85 to get back at George. George had floundered on his finishing and Halliday was in no mood to let his lead slip as he hit double top to win the points for the away side.

Iggy also had a night to forget with his darts as he lost out to E Donaldson in the 6th leg. Ian had an obsession with the big 12 and found it with alarming regularity although Donaldson hit several treble 20s during his game. Remarkably, Donaldson's finishing was so poor that he allowed Iggy to have a dart at tops to win the leg but it was all over next throw as the away player hit double 2.

The final game was played out between Martyn Cooke and G Hardy, with the away player throwing some of the slowest darts since Frankie McGann's heydey. Martyn threw a below average opening 9 darts and went behind when Hardy struck a 121. Martyn's response was deadly with a terrific 180 to reclaim the lead. The leg was arguably the best of the night and Martyn topped it off with an 80 finish to make the scoreline a little bit more respectable.

In the dominoes, Bobby Balls lost the opening leg at the hands of G Lawton but that was to be the only blip as the next 4 legs all went the way of the Vic. Tucker Muncaster took the next leg at the expense of D Gill to level the scores before Captain Les Graham took the 3rd leg against D Potter.

The irrepressible Norman NcKenna won yet another leg for the Vic with H Getting becoming his latest victim before Iggy rounded the night off as he despatched G Halliday in the final chalk.

Friday night is a cup match with 2 competitions being played simultaneously (that means at the same time Tommy  Very Happy  Very Happy ) featuring the individual 20 doubles darts competition as well as the pairs dominoes. George will be representing the Vic in the darts with the likely dominoes pairing being Iggy and Tucker. The tie will be played at Parkside Club with opponents including the Times Inn, Lord Byron and Deneside Club.
