Post Post subject: Vic v Marlborough Result 03/03/2008
I'll have to rely on memory to do this weeks report as I handed the card to Brian Newby to avoid the possibility of yet another fine and forgot to jot down the match details. Apologies to anyone whose details are reported incorrectly.

After last weeks' shock result going down 4-3 against the Lord Byron the Vic hoped for a better performance this week and the late arrival of Kev Cunningham gave the home lads a boost as Norman McKenna failed to arrive having ran head first into a bus over the weekend.

Stevie Burton returned from illness to replace The Nonk and the only other change from last weeks debacle was Martyn Cooke in for Craig Greenfield.

A strong looking line up from the Marlborough featured former Murtonian, Mick Doggett, who seems to have calmed down in recent years having helped to increase the birth rate in East Durham single handedly. This might be one of the reasons Mick was always shattered by the time Monday night came around and his energy to play darts for the Vic was virtually non-existent after his weekends shenanigans  Laughing  Laughing

George Jennings played first for the Vic and as usual played Brian Newby, this time Jr, and a poor start from Brian (22) was pounced upon by Geordie who notched a ton. More wayward darts from Brian and a 60 from George gave George the advantage before Brian struck a 125, 60 and another ton plus score to leave the home player reeling. Brian proved to be as good at doubling as trebling by taking out double 4 at the 2nd attempt to complete a very impressive 20 dart leg.

Kev Cunningham had the throw against John Olley in leg 2 and a weak start from Kev who managed just over a ton in his opening 9 darts had both players level. A 140 and a ton from Kev saw him hit the front with Olley hardly looking like he would take the leg. Kev then hit double trouble and Olley, a caretaker by trade, decided to take care of Kev by throwing some great darts and his 4th attempt at double 16 was sufficient to give the Marlborough a 2-0 lead against 2 of the Vics most consistent players.

Stevie Kell played Brian Newby Sr in leg 3 and Steve threw a wretched leg which was incidental as Newby threw his usual consistent darts and he recorded an excellent 18 dart leg finishing on 83 by taking out 17, treble 10 and double 18.

After a shocker of a leg last week, Iggy returned from an unsuccessful attempt in the doms to face the daunting prospect of playing Eddie Ashman, winner of most of his games so far this season. Iggy proved that that a week is a long time in darting circles and ripped up the form book as he responded to Ashmans opening throws of 26 and 41 by hitting 45 and 121. Sadly that was as good as it got for Iggy and Ashman eventually got into his stride as Ian buckled. With the scores fairly even I left for a quick call of nature and by the time I returned it was 4-0 to the Marlborough.

Martyn Cooke played the well barracked Mick Doggett in leg 5 and Martyn surged into an early lead as Mick played like he was representing the Vic again. Doggett was all for giving up and a low throw of 3 took the low score of the night accolade but he was given hope as Martyn failed to hit his double having had the chance to win in 18 darts himself. Doggett kept plugging away as Martyn missed double 2 by the narrowest of margins and showed how to finish by taking out 85 in 2 darts.

WIth the Vic 5-0 behind Stevie Burton had the darts against a resurgent Sandy Pattison who seems to have rediscovered his form this season. Sandy had a couple of 80 plus scores in the opening stages and Stevie tried to keep pace but was always behind after an opening throw of 22. Both players traded similar scores from then on but Sandy closed the game out by taking out 60 as Stevie waited on 105.

Surely Tommy Cummings wouldn't allow the Club to slide to a first ever whitewash as he played Alan Brown, a Mini Me version of Tommy himself in the final leg. Tommy held the upper hand as Brown managed 2 single figure scores with his opening 6 darts. Tommy threw steady darts as Brown eventualy got his game together but it looked nailed on that Tom would take the consolation leg for the home team. In a game not disimilar to Martyn's though, Tommy choked on his double and Brown almost struck a magnificent 140 checkout, only thwarted by narrowly missing double 10. Tommy failed to hit double 3 next time though and Brown gave the Marlborough the final leg by taking out double 10 to leave Tommy swearing before taking his frustration out on the bait.

The dominoes fared little better and were undoubtedly rocked by the absence of the talismanic Nonka, winner of almost all of his games so far this season, and probably the best dominoes player seen since the retirement of the Dominator  Wink  Wink

Don't know the running order or the opposition but Tucker Mancaster went down 3-0, George Jennings, Les Graham and Ian Graham all lost before Ballsy (yes really) gave the Vic the only chalk of the night as he came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2. Even more worryingly for the rest of the doms lads, Bobby played out a peeler chalk at 2-0 down when he and his opponent both counted 31 apiece, surely some kind of record.

No game for the Vic this Friday in the preliminary round of the next cup competition, a rather strange one involving 4 darts players and 7 dominoes players with the first to aggregate 6 legs advancing to the next stage of the competition. The Vic will be at home to the winner between the Albion and the Marlborough on Friday 14 March where we'll hope to put up more of a fight than this week.

Next Monday is a trip to Tommy's favourite bait house of the darting calendar as we had to the Mallard and I'll be hoping they add a bit of ex-lax to the curry especially for Tom  Wink  Wink  Wink
