The Vic returned to darts and dominoes duty following the Easter break and took on MItchells of Seaham (formerly Westlea Club). A succession of defeats has seen the Vic tumble to a season low 17th place but hopes were high of a return to winning ways against a team who are currently fighting with the Navy Club for this season's wooden spoon.
The Vic were missing Martyn Cooke and Craig Greenfield from the darts line up but the return of Norman McKenna saw him go straight back into the side and an under the weather Stevie Burton also held onto his place.
Despite the return of The Nonk, he couldn't force his way into a struggling dominoes side and an unchanged line up attempted to arrest a decline which has gone on even longer than that of the darts team.
Tommy Cummings took the oche for the opening leg and played L Jopson for Mitchells. A quickfire shoot out followed with both players throwing steady but unspectaculor darts and it wasn't until Tommy hit an 80 that he managed to get ahead in the leg. Tommy held onto his lead and took out double 10 to secure victory in 27 darts.
Norman McKenna played Phil Clubb in the 2nd leg and it was Norman who made the brighter start with a steady 60 as Clubb struggled to find his range. Afer a brief wobble Norman then hit a ton and an 85 to race clear. Needing 144 to finish, Nonk hit 101 to leave a 2 darter and Clubb was still way back on 200+. McKenna was in no mood to hang around though and hit double 10 to send the Vic into a 2-0 lead.
Stevie Kell was lucky that he hadn't been mortally wounded after taking one of Tommy Cumming's farts flush in the face earlier in the evening but he recovered just enough to take on B Thynne in the 3rd leg. The wavy haired visitor hit 85 with his opening throw to get the game underway. Kell, sporting considerably less hair from his coconut cut, responded with an 81 of his own and an even contest was blighted as Kell hit a ton to surge ahead. This proved to be his undoing though as a succession of poor scores followed enabling Thynne to keep in touch. Both players were down to a double at the same time and Thynne was desperately unlucky to see his attempt at 59 narrowly fail before Kell bore down his opponent and hit his double to give the home side a 3-0 advantage.
The alcohol free version of Stevie Burton was up next against M Whitehead who himself appeared to be lacking confidence in his darts. Both players found it hard going early on and Burton regularly made sorties to the 19 cover shot on his way down. A 99 and an 85 were to prove to be the highlight of Burton's scores with Whitehead hitting the odd treble 20 along the way. WIth Whitehead on a 2 dart finish, Burton steadied himself for double 8 and hit the dead centre with his 2nd attempt, ending a terrible run of home defeats while at the same time securing the match for the Vic.
Kevin Cunningham was up against K Savage in the next leg and Savage had a desperate start to the match as he hit 2 single 1's before single 20. Kev started out with a 41 of his own before both players managed to score more freely. Kev hit a couple of tons plus 2 60's as Savage gamely battled away to keep within biting distance. Kev had a minor wobble on the doubles but took out double 12 as Savage waited on a 2 dart finish.
Ian Graham played the final leg out of turn as Geordie was playing dominoes, against K James representing Mitchells. James started out in similar fashion to the previous leg with 2 darts into single 1 before managing to straighten up his throw. Once again, both players found it tough going with Ian hitting a ton to provide the only bright spot in his leg. James started to throw steadier when he diverted to the treble 19 area and left himself on a 2 darter as Ian sized up a finish of his own. James got the away team on the scoresheet as he took out double top in his next trip to the oche.
Geordie Jennings finished the games off as he played T Gibson, the visiting captain. Geordie hit scores of 123, 100 and 140 to complete an excellent 24 dart leg with what was easily the most impressive leg of the night. Gibson was still way back by the time George finished and was slightly unfortunate as he hit numerous treble 1's and 5's during his leg.
Although I didn't write a report after the last game before Easter, I have to point out that the dominoes side suffered yet another 4-1 reverse with only Captain Les Graham claiming a consolation victory. I couldn't really bring myself to write a report just to cover Les in glory so decided to do exactly that
.
Tonight, however, the side suffered an identical fate and Les threatened me that if I didn't give him a mention he'd force The Dominator out of retirement. Hence the fact that I'm writing a report tonight which hails the prolific Les as he managed to double his season long tally of victories by securing the opening leg against R Whitehead. Les' new found talent for sniffing out individual victories haven't yet been extended to helping out his team mates though and son Ian went on next only to suffer defeat at the hands of Tommy Kennedy.
At 1-1 Bobby Balls played D Bolton and for once this season Bolton was to enjoy an away victory. Lets hope that doesn't happen in the footballing context until they're officially in the Championship.
Geordie Jennings, who kept the multi-victorious Norman McKenna out of the starting line up was himself beaten up by A Clubb in the 4th leg to hand victory to Mitchells. Tucker Muncaster played the last leg but found J Burns to be too hot as he too lost out to give Mitchells a resounding 4-1 victory.
Next week is away to The Albion which is another of Tommy's favourite away games due to the sheer volume of food served up. This should be another tough game and the Vic will hope to have both Cooke and Greenfield back in the squad.
Final word has to go to Les Graham for completing a memorable personal double in the dominoes and he'll be hoping that if he plays Sammy Smith next week that Sammy is suffering his own unique case of alcohol blindness in his bid for a hat-trick.
